The app may have suffered from a terrible UI but its capabilities were nothing short of scary \u2013 it was bringing the beginning of the deepfake revolution to everyone\u2019s smartphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agency09.co\/simplifyingtheweb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MugLife_12262019212347.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2343\" width=\"380\" height=\"333\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Mug Life has evolved a great deal since then. You can upload a real face or even a random meme haphazardly drawn in MS Paint and it will be brought to life. Mug Life\u2019s Android release has meant better revenues for the company \u2013 SensorTower estimates that the app earned a net $40,000 last month. And now there are a dozen apps just like it; they use algorithms that go far beyond your ordinary dog face filters, turning images into videos that are soon going to be impossible to tell apart from reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.agency09.co\/simplifyingtheweb\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/MugLife_12262019211410.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2342\" width=\"189\" height=\"309\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Deepfakes are created using a Generative\nAdversarial Network \u2013 a type of machine learning architecture that takes a\nlarge volume of data as input (eg. videos of a person) and learns how to create\nfake content involving that person. The availability of open-source programs\nmeans you could literally buy a PC with 8GB of RAM and train the software to\nfake someone\u2019s face within a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does this mean for ordinary citizens? A\nslim chance of financial fraud or revenge porn. It\u2019s going to be a whole lot\nworse for celebs, politicians and billionaires whose livelihood depends on\ntheir reputation. They\u2019ll either have to normalize being part of traumatic\nadult videos or continuously spend $$$ on counter-propaganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another issue might be politicians declaring <em>real <\/em>videos as deepfakes \u2013 how will it\neven be proved what\u2019s real and what isn\u2019t? Epstein obviously killed himself,\nbecause if any evidence of crime exists, it will instantly be \u201cproven\u201d in court\nto be deepfake content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not all bad, though. Deepfake tech can\nput a smile on everyone\u2019s face. Like when it was used to put Carrie Fisher in\nStar Wars Episode IX. Or Paul Walker in the 8326th instalment of Fast &\nFurious.
